Flow takes place in the direction of the arrows under forward or reverse flows.

B=Valve Closed
C= Diaphragm
D= Cone
With flow in the forward direction,once design pressure is reached the diaphragm deflects inwards (A) allowing easy passage of the gas or liquid.
When there is no flow or low pressure conditions the diaphragm returns to its relaxed condition (B) sealing off all flow.
